Occurrence Bulletin : 8Q-ISB Accident at Velana International Airport

An accident occurred today, on 4 October 2017, whilst an Island Aviation Services Limited (Maldivian) aircraft was landing at the Water Aerodrome of Velana International Airport (VIA). The aircraft was travelling from Niyama Private Islands Maldives to VIA.

Type of Aircraft: DHC-6-300

No. of Passengers: 15

No. of Crew: 3

Time of Occurrence: Approximately 4:16 pm local time

The passengers nor the crew sustained any injuries although the aircraft sustained severe damage and partly sank upside down into the eastern side of VIA water aerodrome. Some of the passengers and crew were taken to Hulhumale' hospital for examination and have now been released. This accident is currently being investigated by the Accident Investigation Committee and the Civil Aviation Authority.
